Materials Science Degree Apprentice working towards a fully funded BSc in Materials Science.

The Role – Materials Science Degree Apprentice

 The role is part of the Quality Assurance and Compliance department at Luxfer MEL Technologies’ (LMT) Manchester site. The magnesium business within LMT design, develop and manufacture novel magnesium alloys used in a range of applications from aerospace. The zirconium chemicals business at LMT develop materials that go into catalyst, ceramic and automotive applications.

As a Materials Science Apprentice you will be working in the Quality Assurance and Compliance team, supporting the world-class R&D and Manufacturing teams to deliver novel high-performance materials around the globe. You will complete placements in other departments such as Quality Control, R&D and Manufacturing, which will be done in six monthly blocks.

You will also attend Sheffield Hallam University on the materials science apprenticeship course and after 4.5 years will complete with a degree in materials science. This will include several days a month at the university attending lectures.

Main responsibilities:
Your duties will include but not limited to:
 
  • Preparing and analysing technical data for Quality Assurance and Regulatory purposes
  • Mechanical and chemical testing of materials for preparation of Regulatory submissions
  • Assisting in R&D projects in both the Magnesium Alloys and Zirconium Chemicals businesses
  • Collating results and report writing as evidence of due diligence and auditing for compliance
  • Work with the wider business to improve all company products and processes within Quality Management Systems and Regulatory frameworks

Note - In a rapidly developing business environment, flexible team working is the way forward to meet the Company’s goals as set in the overall strategic plan. Therefore, you will, from time to time, be required to undertake other activities of a similar nature that fall within your capabilities. It is necessary for each employee to assist, or cover all aspects of their departmental responsibilities when the need arises.


What you’ll need to be considered for the Material Science Degree Apprentice role:
  • A minimum of 112 UCAS points at A-level or equivalent (grades BBC or similar), with at least two A levels including Mathematics and a mathematics-based subject
  • GCSE Mathematics and English Language (grade A*-C / 9-4) or equivalent
  • Good working knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook and PowerPoint
  • Hard working and self-motivated, with a keen interest to learn and develop
  • Superb time management and prioritisation skills
  • Ability to work in a fast paced and challenging environment whilst meeting tight deadlines
  • Professional interpersonal skills, and a team player with a committed, flexible and positive approach to work
